Alisha Granderson (she/her/hers)
Parent Organizer for the Peoria Parents Project
My name is Alisha Granderson and I am the Parent Organizer for the Peoria Parents Project, also known as (P32). We are a grassroots parent organization that advocates and fights for education justice for Peoria Public Schools students.
Our goals are to extend the Peoria Parents Project into becoming a reliable resource for parents throughout the community. Resources will include necessities such as parenting classes, support groups, and helping parents who experience language barriers by offering foreign language classes.
We also want to help parents evolve by connecting them to resources that can provide a better life or lifestyle for themselves and their children. Resources such as financial literacy classes, homebuyers programs, and emotional support can greatly improve parents and students’ health overall.
I am proud that we have successfully incorporated the Parent Mentor Program, which is a statewide program that allows parents to volunteer in their child’s school weekly, into two of Peoria’s public schools. Joining the program in 2022, we started with five parents and now currently have twelve parents volunteering in the classrooms and working with students either one-one-one or in small groups.
We are also proud to have partnered with the Peoria Federation of Teachers to build a bridge between parents and teachers so that together we can support the students in whatever needs they have within their schools and the school district.
I love watching comedy movies and writing songs. I am currently learning how to play the electric and acoustic guitar so that I can one day join an all girls rock band.
