Illinois Green New Deal Coordinator
Dany is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico City, a DREAMer, and a son to working class parents. Their journey to find their “American Dream”, a better life for Dany and his sister, has led Dany to re-evaluate what that “Dream” means for himself, for his community, for his future children, and for all of our future children. That Dream has been challenged by uncovering internalized layers of “white supremacy” built in through his growth as a young Latino in a mostly white affluent neighborhood. It was reconstructed working in “corporate America”, where the perspective meant that success meant how much money was in a back account, and evolving to realize that true value comes from connections to his community through his work as a grassroots organizer.
Through these connections, Dany uncovered that our generation’s “Dreams”, and those of the younger generation are being threatened to turn into an existential nightmare, as the looming effects of Climate Change are being exacerbated by the longstanding economic systems that have created a bleak uncertainty for our future.
However, as a lifelong Dreamer, he believes this crisis presents an opportunity to organize people to establish a new reality. A reality where In the transition of our energy and transportation systems to lose their dependence on fossil fuel, we can build out wealth for our generation. One where we can dismantle the systems of inequity by prioritizing education and care work as careers with dignified wages. And where as we reconnect our relationship with Mother Earth, to each other, we can make our Dream a reality through a Green New Deal that ensures we create a society that works for us all humans, Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian or White.
