Abbie Illenberger joined Grassroots Collaborative as Field Director in the spring of 2013, and became Deputy Director in 2017. Abbie is responsible for developing local and state organizing campaigns and objectives, and civic engagement strategies connected to those objectives. Their work has brought critical strategic and technical skills to the organization, our member organizations, and allies.
Abbie has more than 25 years of community, labor and political organizing experience, working predominantly with low-wage workers and in low-income communities. Most recently, Abbie served as a senior staff member with We Are Wisconsin, a labor/community coalition. leading organizing teams responsible for recall campaigns in 3 State Senate districts in 2011, and coordinated the implementation of innovative voter engagement and leadership development programs for the 2012 gubernatorial recall.
Prior, Abbie served as the National Deputy Political Director for UNITE HERE for 5 years, following 4 years working for UNITE on member engagement and education, political campaigns and policy fights. Before this, Abbie was the Program Director at Project South, based in Atlanta. There they provided organizing support (strategy, research and organizing) and popular education-based leadership development for organizations leading campaigns for Living Wages, Just Welfare Reform, and Workers’ Rights.
